Rating: ...LIterally Marvelous.
Summary:
Though the author has described her book this way, referring to Chelsea Devantez's book as just a "comedy gal" memoir doesn't do the overall arc justice. This series of essays runs the gamut of emotions-from harrowing to hilarious. Structured as an ode to the women who've shaped her, with each chapter named after one of them, she recounts tales of domestic violence, a childhood dalliance with the Church of Latter Day Saints, navigating a career in entertainment, and the realities of a female friendship breakup.
As Devantez says in her introduction, "This book is going to start off very sad, and then it's going to get a lot happier. But before you get to the good stuff, you're gonna have to make it through some tragic shit. Just like I had to.
Lindsay's Thoughts:
Admittedly, I am a huge Chelsea Devantez fan from her "Glamorous Trash" podcast, but believe me when I say, this collection has essays is no exception to her greatness. She tackles traumas with genuine tenderness and the hilarious perspective of a comedy writer who's had plenty of therapy. I particularly loved her focus on female friendship, and its ability to lift women out of dire circumstances, from depression to abusive situations to poverty. I loved this book because it truly offers something for any kind of reader.
