Book Review: My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

Rating: ...Literally Marvelous

Summary:

In "My Lady Jane," coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows craft a unique YA fantasy reminiscent of *The Princess Bride*. It features a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only loosely follows actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help. Sixteen-year-old Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and embroiled in a conspiracy to steal her cousin King Edward's throne. But Jane isn't worried about these minor issues; she gets to be Queen of England. What could possibly go wrong?

Magda's Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book—I'm a sucker for historical fiction that kicks off with a real-life scenario, and this one was awesome. It’s based on Queen Jane Gray, who was only queen for nine days, but what if she didn’t die and there was magic involved? I loved how Jane and Guilford, our main characters, loved and protected each other. Even though it wasn’t a love marriage at first, their back-and-forth and the tension between them were so good. The twists at the end and the nods to real historical figures like Mary Tudor (aka Bloody Mary), Henry VIII, and Margaret Beaufort were a nice touch. It was a super entertaining read and a great way to gear up for the Amazon series. Plus, it totally cured my Bridgerton hangover!
